About Child & Adolescent Counseling
Ensuring Safe and Confidential Counseling for Minors
At The Volition Collective, we provide counseling services to minors under 18, but we have specific policies in place to protect them, our collective, and to avoid litigious situations. The confidential and trusting relationship created between the teen and therapist is a crucial factor in the success of teen counseling.
Involving Parents in Counseling
When we see a child in counseling, we always involve the parents. Especially with a younger child, the parent becomes the therapist in the home. We work with parents to explore better ways for their children and family to deal with conflict, undue anxiety, depression, habit problems, and responses to loss, illness, death, and divorce. When children experience something that is too much for them, they let you know with symptoms.
Confidentiality in Counseling
We discuss confidentiality with both the child and parents when we begin counseling. Confidentiality issues differ depending on a child’s age, maturity, and the intensity with which a child wants something to be private. Very young children often expect what they discuss in counseling to be shared with a parent. We respect their privacy, but we also have a responsibility to ensure their safety. If there is abuse or threats to self or others, we may have to break confidentiality to ensure the child’s safety.
About Counseling Young Children (Ages 3-8)
Expert Counseling for Children through Play Therapy
At The Volition Collective, we offer tailored counseling services for children using traditional play therapy and other therapeutic techniques. Our goal is to address the unique needs of each child and provide them with the tools to manage their emotions and relationships.
Combining Behavioral and Cognitive Therapy
Our approach includes teaching children behavioral techniques to manage stress, anger, and improve relationships. We also use cognitive therapy tools to replace negative thoughts with positive ones, helping children develop healthier mindsets.
The Benefits of Play Therapy
We understand that young children may have difficulty communicating their problems through conventional methods. That’s why we offer play therapy sessions, where children can express themselves in a safe and supportive environment without resorting to negative behaviors. We also use games specifically designed for therapy to complement our approach.
Therapy Sessions for Preschool Children
Our therapy sessions for preschool children last for an hour, with a half-hour dedicated to play and the other half-hour for working with both the child and parent on specific issues. We cover topics such as managing impulsive behavior, staying safe, and responding to limits. Our therapists work with parents to develop practical solutions and strategies that can be applied at home.

About Counseling Teens (Ages 13 – 18)
Adolescent Counseling: Supporting Teens Through a Challenging Time
Adolescence is a tumultuous time, marked by challenges like defiance, irresponsible behavior, and substance use. At The Volition Collective, we specialize in working with adolescents aged 13-18, helping them to discover their strengths, voice, and skills to modify inappropriate behavior. Our goal is to provide guidance to parents as well, helping them to provide positive interaction, appropriate boundaries, and increase positive behavior.
Connecting with Adolescents and Families
Our sessions with adolescents are typically weekly and individual, with efforts to connect the adolescent and family as much as possible. Adolescents are given confidentiality for what they say in sessions unless there is abuse or threats to self or others. Family, school, and community are all involved in our work with adolescents as needed.
Addressing a Range of Issues
The Volition Collective specializes in adolescent counseling, addressing a range of issues such as low self-esteem, depression, weight issues, AD/HD, social issues, self-injury, sexual abuse, substance abuse, and grief and loss. We use talk therapy in combination with experiential methods such as journaling, creative writing, art, and music.
Empowering Teens to Succeed
Our counseling goal is to help adolescents develop a strong sense of identity rooted in honesty, compassion, self-responsibility, and respect. We work together to teach them how to express emotions, communicate needs, increase self-confidence, define values, establish personal boundaries, and gain other life skills for academic, emotional, and social success.
Expert Support and Guidance for Adolescents and Parents
We understand that some adolescents may be resistant to therapy, and our skilled therapists are experienced in making them feel comfortable from the start. Parents play a vital role in our team approach, and we encourage their active participation and feedback.
In summary, adolescence can be a difficult time for both teens and their parents, but with our counseling and guidance, adolescents can navigate this challenging period with confidence and positivity. At The Volition Collective, we empower teens to develop into responsible, self-aware adults with a strong sense of self and the tools they need to succeed.
